Ruby Frost is one of many musician/vocalists that recently appeared on our radar as many blogs, press outlets and producers have been raving about her. Now this is coming from the fact she had a stint on TV reporting ala The Erin Simpson Show as their roving music correspondent. BTW her real name is Jane De Jong and Ruby Frost is a pretty choice name to write under.
Having apprehensive thoughts of not reviewing another dime a dozen folk/electronic singer I decided to give the video to her new single ‘Moonlight’ a stab just for giggles.
The music is pretty good, probably not as good with the likes of Kimbra who has that quirk factor working for her, with this it just good and substantial. I’d say it’s easy to get in to which I grant, I mean it’s not a horrible song, there is a great latch to it but it feels rather meh due to our predilections towards vocalists that we’ve already interviewed in the past.
For some odd reason I have this weird Australian electronic vibe with the overall sound of ‘Moonlight’ and it’s probably from the company she keeps with Renowned producer Chris Zane collaborating on some of her tracks, not sure if he did this one. BTW its fricken short!
Now the video is again haphazard and uninteresting probably for the fact it’s in black n white and that kind of bores me. Sorry if I’m sounding like I’m giving out pot shots to Ruby Frost detriment here but I feel rather under whelmed with the video and if they were going for the film noir thing, well doesn’t work.
Sure there are visuals happening with the superimposing here and there of Ruby, her singing down the barrel of the camera lens with this kaleidoscope in the damn way and coming off as the biggest Bjork rip off….just roll with it.
Wow I’m actually gonna finish this review off pretty early. In the end the song is of a passable standard and I do like it, just wish the video wasn’t so meh to begin with…I mean this is your calling card Ruby, you need to throw some pizazz into it. With all that I’d say watch the video for the song and only the song because I don’t know if there is a single out on the digital plains, but until then contend with viewing this video and for the love of god can everyone shut the hell up about her hype already!?
